Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in Colorado, killing an estimated 4,300 people each year. This is more than all fires, car accidents, suicides, homicides, cocaine or heroin overdose, alcohol or AIDS-related deaths combined. Tobacco-related illnesses are responsible for more than $1.3 billion in annual health care costs in Colorado. Approximately 22% of Clear Creek adults use tobacco products. Tobacco use and the hazards of second-hand smoke are a public health problem.

The Clear Creek Public and Environmental Health Department works in cooperation with the state in providing educational information and cessation services to the public on tobacco use, control and prevention. Educational resources are available on the following topics:

  • QuitLine Phone Cessation Services: Coaching and Nicotine Patch, quitting tips and personalized quit plans
  • Posters, flyers, brochures and educational materials for businesses, schools or individuals
  • Smoke-free home and auto pledges
  • Health provider and day-care provider training in tobacco prevention
  • FDA requirements and Tobacco Enforcement Guidelines for Tobacco Retailers
  • Compliance with Colorado’s Clean Indoor Air Act/Signage for smoke-free areas
  • The health hazards of second- and third-hand smoke
  • Youth Access Prevention Initiatives
  • Class room education for school children
  • Chronic Disease prevention through cessation
  • Maternal/Child Health: A grant is currently in place for the Baby and Me Tobacco Free Program. This program provides health screenings and free diapers to new mothers who quit tobacco. For information, call the Public Health Nurse at (303) 670-7546.

Cessation Class: Free cessation classes and facilitated forums are sometimes available depending on grant funds. Call (303) 679-2539 if you would like to be on a call list of  participants interested in a cessation progrm, or if you would like an educational presentation.
