The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, is investigating a death that occurred inside a residence in the 400 block of Silver Lakes Dr, Dumont. Around 5:15pm yesterday, Feb 6, 2026, the CCSO executed an Attempt to Locate warrant for a subject who failed to appear in court on Jan 21, 2026.

When deputies entered the home on Silver Lakes Dr, an adult male was located deceased. The male matched the description of the subject of the warrant, and a family member identified him as Aaron Family (DOB 4/20/82). Family appears to have died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death occurred many days ago, possibly prior to his Jan 21 court date. The Clear Creek County Coroner’s Office will confirm identification and determine cause, manner, and date of death.

After the Sheriff’s Office discovered the decedent yesterday evening, two individuals living in the home were arrested as follows:

  • Kenneth Walcott (DOB 6/1/46) was arrested pending the charge of Accessory to a Crime – First Degree Assault, a Class 5 Felony
  • Phyllis Hull (DOB 7/23/46), the mother of Aaron Family, was arrested pending the charge of Concealing Death, a Class 1 Misdemeanor

The 5th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will determine final charges. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven otherwise through the judicial process.

Aaron Family was facing multiple charges related to an incident that occurred on Oct 18, 2025. That day, Family is alleged to have been involved in a hit and run crash in the Safeway parking lot in Idaho Springs. When law enforcement later located Family in his vehicle on Dumont Lane, Family failed to comply with commands to exit the vehicle. An Idaho Springs Police Officer and a CCSO sergeant attempted to remove Family from his vehicle, but Family is alleged to have put the vehicle in reverse, dragging the officer and sergeant backward several feet and knocking the officer down before fleeing in his vehicle. The officer sustained serious bodily injury but has made a full recovery.

A short time later that day, the Sheriff’s sergeant located Family’s vehicle traveling east on I-70. When the sergeant attempted to initiate a traffic stop near mile marker 237, Family is alleged to have rammed the sergeant’s patrol vehicle into a jersey barrier dividing eastbound from westbound, rendering the patrol vehicle disabled. On the afternoon of Oct 18, 2025, after a successful Stop Stick deployment, law enforcement was able to take Family into custody.

For the events of Oct 18, 2025, Family faced charges that included:

  • 1st Degree Assault on a Peace Officer with Deliberation
  • Menacing
  • Vehicular Eluding
  • Driving Under the Influence of Drugs
  • Reckless Driving
  • Reckless Endangerment
  • Failure to Give Information and/or Aid After Damaging Another Vehicle

Bond was set for Family at $200,000. On December 19, 2025, Family posted bond and was released. At that time, his next court appearance was scheduled for Jan 21, 2026. When Family failed to appear, the court appearance was rescheduled to Feb 26, 2026.
